Ease Your Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry
At Adams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we perform gentle treatment that involves minimal discomfort. However, we recognize that you may still feel nervous about your care. For that reason, we proudly offer sedation dentistry at our Columbus, Georgia, practice. Our dentists provide several types of sedation, including nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and innovative NuCalm®. Whether you suffer from dental anxiety, or you are preparing for a lengthy treatment session, our sedation options will make your care less stressful and more relaxing. In some cases, these options can make it possible for you to undergo treatment that you have delayed for years.
Are You a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry can be a great option if you suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. Many people feel slightly nervous when they prepare for a dental appointment. However, if you struggle with these conditions, an office visit can produce feelings of dread and worry. Some patients may feel nauseous, have a racing heartbeat, or have trouble sleeping the night before the appointment.
We use very gentle and precise techniques, sedation can help make your appointment much more relaxing.
Often, this level of anxiety can cause patients to neglect routine dental care. We understand the embarrassment of dental phobia, and we know that it is not your fault. The condition can arise for many reasons. You may have heard frightening stories from other people, or you may have had a bad experience at another practice.
You could also suffer from claustrophobia or a sensitive gag reflex. Whatever the cause of your anxiety, you are likely a candidate for sedation. Sedation may also benefit you if you are preparing for an extensive treatment, such as an extraction or root canal therapy. Although we use very gentle and precise techniques, sedation can help make your appointment much more relaxing.
Types of Sedation
At Adams Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer three types of sedation methods:
- Nitrous oxide: Sometimes referred to as laughing gas, nitrous oxide induces feelings of deep relaxation. Often, it will make you feel slightly giddy or euphoric. We will administer the clear gas through a mask placed over your mouth and nose, and it will take effect quickly. It will also leave your system quickly, enabling you to drive yourself home from your appointment.
- Oral conscious sedation: If you choose oral conscious sedation, We will prescribe powerful anti-anxiety medications. You will take one dose at home the night before your treatment and another in the office. Oral conscious sedation will put you into a deep state of relaxation, called a twilight sleep. In this state, you will not be aware of what is going on during treatment. However, you will be able to answer questions and respond to requests. We follow DOCS protocol for oral sedation, so you will remain safe and comfortable throughout your treatment.
- NuCalm®: NuCalm® utilizes advanced neuroscience techniques to relax your body with no need for narcotics. First, we will provide a topical cream or dietary supplement that will offset the effects of adrenaline. We will also place microcurrent stimulation patches behind both of your ears. During your procedure, you will wear an eye mask and noise-dampening headphones. The headphones will use special software to slow your brain waves so that they are at the pre-sleep stage.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Whichever method you select, sedation dentistry can have enormous benefits. Most importantly, it will make your treatment much easier. With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you will feel peaceful and relaxed. When you opt for oral conscious sedation, you will typically have no memory of your treatment at all.
Additionally, sedation can improve your long-term oral health. Because of your dental anxiety, you may have put off the treatment you need. With our three types of sedation, you can schedule your routine visits to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. If you have already developed oral health problems, you will be able to receive appropriate restorative or cosmetic treatment.
